Kolaveri di

Introduction:

Why this kolaveri Di (kolaveri: Murderous rage and Di: Girl in Tamil), so that is why this murderous rage girl (true translation). Why this kolaveri is the most hit song that took whole world by storm. When I think of the year 2011 I recall only few major incidents such as Egyptian revolution, Anna Hazare's satyagrah and the “soup song”. This song was sung by actor Dhanush and its composition is a brain child of young and gifted music director Anirudh Ravichander. Kolaveri is a down-tempo dance song , in fact this song is unique and it is very difficult to classify it under any known genre. This song is built on the music of typical south Indian music and includes many musical instruments such as nadaswaram, shehnai, saxophone, urumee and thavil drums brilliantly blended with modern day music equipment such as keyboard and guitar. Singing style is typical Tamil. Traditional music is blended with the modern day slang of contemporary youth. The song is about boys dumped by their love. In fact the tone of the song is of a drunk guy. Certain stances of lyrics of the song are nonsense and is in true contrast with a guy high on spirit. The song was officially released on November the 16 of 2011 and it became an instant hit. The success of this song is an example of the power of social media and social networking in promotion. Within the next one week the song received above 1 million views on YouTube. And in the next 1 month it got spread all over the world. Many versions of the song are now available on the internet such as the Japanese version, Chinese version, English version, Punjabi version, Telugu version, Neevan Nigam's version, female version and lots more. This song received its comic dimension after the Pawar slapping incident.

Production and Music Video:

This trend setting "soup song" was created by chance. Aishwarya Rajinikanth Dhanush wife of the singer Dhanush and director of the movie “3” wanted a simple, naive and light hearted song. This song was supposed to be for the failed love. Amazingly this song was not even written on the paper ,in fact the composer Ravichander composed the tune in just 5 minutes and Dhanush came up with the lyrics in just 20 minutes that too playfully. The team did not actually ever conceived that they are going to make such a marvelous "soup song" for “soup boys”. The song features all the Tanglish (Tamil mixed with English) words like I, you, me, how, why, cow with quirky Tamil accent. The song is actually sung as if a Tamil person with a limited English knowledge and high on alcohol is singing after he got dumped by his love.

The music video has nothing special. It involves actor and singer Dhanush, his wife and director of the movie "3" (for which this song is intended to), female protagonist of the movie Shruti Hasan and the gifted composer Ravichander. The video shows the making and recording of the soup song. Actually Dhanush is presented as a drunken and dumped guy singing this song and asking why this girl has "kolaveri" for him, in a non violent and humorous way. In some instances he is asking his wife and composer if the tune is ok, like “tune ok......rhythm correct......super mama, ready,1,2,3..........”. Please see the lyrics for more info.

Composition:

Kolaveri Di is actually a completely new genre of music, as the critics say. The composition is a brainchild of composer Ravichander. The song is actually a cocktail of ancient musical instruments such as nadaswaram, shehnai, saxophone and other instruments such as the urumee and thavil drums blended brilliantly with contemporary era guitar and served with the Tanglish lyrics featuring Tamil slang. The song starts with the shehnai and ends in crescendo.

Reception:

Kolaveri di spread like a virus throughout the world. Within one month form its release date it received 35 million views on youtube and numerous likes on facebook. In fact Facebook played a major role for making this video go viral which shows the power of social networking in marketing. The song is also a hit among non-Tamils because apart from Kolaveri there is apparently no other Tamil word. So even non Tamil speaker can also understand this Tanglish song.

It is the first Tamil song to be premiered on MTV India, on 24 November 2011. Ironically Japanese discos and nightclubs feature people dancing on the tunes of Kolaveri di. The popularity of the song was reported by international media like BBC and Time magazine. Indian Institutes of Management conducted studies to figure out the popularity of this song and prepared a case study which is helping the management students understand the power of viral promotion and internet marketing.
